Program Details (pdf)

The Anoka Technical College Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Mechanical Drafting & 设计 Technology is a 69-credit program that consists of technical courses 设计ed to develop 技能 in mechanical drafting, 设计, and related fields.

All manufactured goods are created following a 设计 process and this process needs to be documented. This documentation includes three-dimensional computer models, detailed two-dimensional drawings, bill of materials, 工程 and manufacturing changes, physical prototypes, 和更多的. The ability to follow strict industry standards while utilizing creativity to solve and document complex problems is the job of a mechanical 设计er.

In addition to drafting and detailing 技能, students receive training in related areas such as industrial materials, manufacturing methods, 加工, and professional communication. 学生 also receive hands-on training in Anoka Technical College’s computer aided drafting lab. (AutoCAD, Inventor, ProE/Creo, and SolidWorks)

The primary goal of the Mechanical Drafting and 设计 program is to provide all graduates with the solid technical foundation necessary to ensure their success in a wide variety of employment opportunities. To accomplish this goal, program learning outcomes and program objectives are defined and assessed for continuous improvement.

Program Objectives. Graduates two to three years into their careers should have the foundation to:
1. 识别, create and evaluate solutions to complex 工程-related problems in a timely and professional manner utilizing the 技能 developed in the areas of 设计, manufacturing and mechanics.
2. Solve technical problems while considering the local, 国家, and global requirements and impact of the solution.
3. Successfully function as a team member and leader.

  1. 应用 the knowledge, 技术, 技能, and modern tools of the discipline to narrowly defined 工程 technology activities.
  2. 应用 a knowledge of mathematics, 科学, 工程, and technology to 工程 technology problems that require limited application of principles but extensive practical knowledge.
  3. Conduct standard tests and measurements, and to conduct, analyze, and interpret experiments.
  4. Function effectively as a member of a technical team.
  5. 识别, analyze, and solve narrowly defined 工程 technology problems.
  6. 应用写, 口服, and graphical communication in both technical and non-technical environments; and identify and use appropriate technical literature.
  7. Underst和 need for and an ability to engage in self-directed continuing professional development.
  8. Understand and commit to addressing professional and ethical responsibilities, including a respect for diversity.
  9. Commit to quality, timeliness, and continuous improvement.
  10. Demonstrate knowledge and technical competency appropriate to the objectives of the program in 工程 materials, applied mechanics, and manufacturing methods.
  11. Demonstrate knowledge and technical competency appropriate to the objectives of the program in applied drafting practice emphasizing mechanical components and systems, as well as fundamentals of descriptive geometry, orthographic projection, 切片, tolerancing and dimensioning, and basic computer aided drafting and 设计 with technical depth in at least one of these areas.
  12. Demonstrate knowledge and technical competency appropriate to the objectives of the program in the application of physics and 工程 materials having an emphasis in applied mechanics, or in-depth application of physics having emphasis in mechanical components and 设计.

Anoka Technical College Mechanical Drafting and 设计 Technology program graduates find employment with manufacturing companies, 大与小, 工程 firms, electro-mechanical companies and contract firms. Mechanical Drafting and 设计 Technology graduates have the necessary knowledge and an excellent foundation to begin their careers as mechanical drafters in 工程 departments that 设计 and manufacture hard goods products of every description. Most mechanical drafters begin as detail drafters, making the drawings required for the manufacture of products. Mechanical drafters can advance to supervisory positions within the department or may advance to assistant engineer as they gain experience. Other areas of advancement include purchasing and sales.
